A Surprise
I spent a few years in the RAAF as a pilot. They were good times for the most part.
There was a guy on my pilots course who ended up becoming a good mate. A really good mate. You know one of those people who if you don’t speak to for a few years, when you do make contact once again it’s as though it was just yesterday when you talked last. Things just pick up where they left off without much change at all.
I hadn’t heard from this guy for a couple of years and it was always in the back of my mind that something may have happened to him. He just disappeared - for no fathomable reason.
Last week he left me a short message on MSN letting me know he was sorry to hear about the death of my Dad.
Good news all around - firstly knowing he’s at least alive and not on deaths door; secondly to hear from him; and thirdly that my fathers death meant something to him to the point of making contact.
There’s nothing like good friends - not a good wine, a good meal nor a good book or movie.
J.E. Sheehan 11 Mar 1920 - 7 Nov 2007
Today I will be celebrating the late J.E. Sheehan with a glass of merlot. Even though he had all but stopped drinking his cherished red by August 2007, it is fitting to be toasting him on this day, the anniversary of his birth in Launceston, Tasmania. Cheers JS.
